Youth Rugby Coverage from Teen Kids TV
Here’s some great video coverage of youth rugby courtesy of Teen Kids News. Getting the sport to a broader audience is the fastest way to grow the game and even a short piece from a non rugby source can leave a great impression on kids.
Flag Rugby Starts June 26th
It’s not too late to get your kids in on America’s fastest growing sport! Actually it’s never too late and the program is free for boys and girls age 6-14, so bring them out.
Rugby is a fun and faced paced sport that can greatly benefit players in their pursuit of other sports. It’s a great physical activity and teaches kids sportsmanship and teamwork.
The Akron Youth Rugby Summer 2010 Flag rugby program starts Saturday June 26th, 9:00am at the Akron Rugby Facility.
The first couple of weeks will focus on practice time and introducing the players to the fundamentals of rugby. Practices will be a combination of skills and game time.

Looking for a great opportunity to see rugby live?
The Rugby 7’s Collegiate Championship Invitational is a new, sixteen team round-robin tournament featuring some of the top collegiate rugby teams in the country. With only seven players per team playing on the same size pitch as a 15s match, sevens rugby offers non-stop action where speed, high scoring & athleticism rule the day.
As Rugby Sevens will be an Olympic sport in 2016, the Collegiate Championship Invitational will showcase the top college rugby players in the nation and future Olympians.
The tournament is being held June 4-6th at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. As added incentive to attend, the tournament is letting all kids (ages 14 & under) in for free.
To learn more about the tournament or to get tickets, please go to http://www.usasevenscci.com
If you can’t make it to Columbus, NBC Sports will broadcast the Collegiate Championship Invitational live on Saturday and Sunday, June 5-6, 2010. The broadcast is unprecedented in American Rugby history, as it will be the first time collegiate rugby is shown live on a major national network.

I Play Rugby
Summer 2010 Flag Rugby Info
The site is back up and running, but I still don’t know what happened with the other website. The stuff is simply gone. I’m still working on it, but will probably just stick with this easier to manage format.
The information on the 2010 Flag Rugby League is up on the Flag Rugby Page of the website. The league will run from June 23 – August 21, 2010 and boys and girls age 6-14 are encouraged to join. Practices and games will be held on Saturday mornings.
We are also looking into playing games against youth teams from Columbus and Cleveland. Some different options are currently being discussed, but will enable our kids to compete against teams from different areas. As youth rugby grows in Ohio, we’ll look to do more events involving teams from other areas.
There may also be a flag rugby division for youth at the 2010 Akron 10′s Tournament. In that event, Akron Youth Rugby will place at least one team in the tournament. We”ll have details on that as it develops.
There are also a couple out of state youth tournaments available. If there is enough interest, we may also look at putting together a team in the 9-14 age group to compete at one of those events.
As we continue to grow the program, we need everyone to help spread the word. If you know anyone with children, please pass the info to them. Rugby is an exciting and fun sport to play and children pick it up naturally.
With the inclusion of rugby into the Olympics and the growth of the sport at the High School and Collegiate level, more and more opportunities are becoming available for young rugby players.
Keep an eye on www.akronyouthrugby.com for news and updates on our programs.
Technical Difficulties
Please excuse the look of the place, but we’ve experienced some technical difficulties with Akronyouthrugby.com. If you were familiar with the site, you can see that it now looks much different. Not really sure what happened, but I lost alot of info somehow. Information on our programs, news, pictures, pretty much everything… gone.
I’m going to work on getting the stuff back online. If not, then I’ll get to work posting the information here so that we can function.
We are beginning our buildup to the 2010 Summer Flag Rugby season. If you would like any information on it, please email me at hardy3@prodigy.net .
Thanks.
Akron Youth Rugby
Welcome to the new website for Akron Youth Rugby. Here you will find information on our program, news on upcoming events, and how you can get your kids playing rugby!
It has been a good first year for the youth program as we held a free Winter Youth Clinic in March that saw over 40 kids in attendance. We followed that up with our first Summer program which ran for 7 weeks in June and July and finished with a youth game at the 2nd Annual Akron 10′s Tournament. The participation at the Akron 10′s was the second straight year that we have had youth rugby at the tournament and look towards a bright future with youth rugby at the Akron 10′s. Overall, we were very happy with the initial response this past year and expect to continue to grow the program each season.
As we turn the corner into 2010 we are already working out details on another Winter Youth Clinic and the summer will see the formal youth program growing leaps and bounds as we strive to get enough kids playing to hold regular games to go along with the regular practices.
I want to take this time to thank all of the people from the Akron Rugby Football Club that helped out with the youth program this past year and the parents for bringing your kids out and letting them experience rugby. We look forward to seeing everyone back out next year.
I would also like to thank the United States Rugby Football Foundation for their generous donation of youth sized rugby balls to our program. They were a big help in getting us going. If you’re looking for a charitable organization within the rugby community (other than the ARFC) to donate to, please give them a look.
